When it comes to creating HTML email there are a number of potential pitfalls that you should be aware of. In order to have a successful email marketing campaign you must avoid these issues at all costs.

Take a look at the following HTML email pitfalls and ensure that you stay away from them:

1. Avoid Careless Errors in HTML Code

When you create an HTML email the most important thing for you to do before sending out your email, is test your email by previewing it. This will allow you to see what the layout of your email will look like when it reaches the inbox of your email recipients. The most important issue here is that by previewing your email you will be aware of any careless mistakes in your HTML code. You will know if your email contains any sloppy HTML code, if there is any leftover code in your email from Microsoft Word or other programs and also if your email contains any open tags. When you send yourself a test HTML email, the errors in your coding will show up as design errors. You will then have the chance to rectify your mistakes before your email reaches your recipients.

2. Avoid Sending HTML Email without a Text Version

There are a large number of people who simply do not like HTML email. If they receive an email which has been created in HTML only, they will either delete it or push it into their junk mail folder. In other words, your HTML email will not be read. It is therefore vital to ensure that your HTML email is accompanied by a text email version. There are also a number of email service providers that block HTML emails that are sent without a text version. This is a huge reason to ensure that you send your HTML emails along with text emails to prevent them from being blocked. So avoid sending pure HTML emails at all costs.

3. Do Not Send Image-Only HTML Emails

When you send an email make sure you do not send it as an image-only email. When you send such emails there is a high chance that your emails will set off spam filters. This is because email service providers use the text inside your email to figure out what sort of email you are sending. If there is no text in your email, or if your email is predominated by images, the email service provider will assume your email is spam mail and will view your email as empty or send it to the trash folder. Therefore avoid sending emails that consist mostly of images.

HTML emails are fraught with pitfalls that can ruin your email marketing campaign. Therefore make a note of these potential trouble spots and avoid them at all costs.
